NuvaRing is a safe, easy to use, and effective once monthly form of contraception. Educate yourself about the benefits and risks while using the birth control ring.

NuvaRing is a once monthly prescription form of contraception that is also known as the vaginal ring or birth control ring. It is a small, flexible piece of circular plastic that is inserted into the vagina and held in place by the vaginal muscles. Once inserted it is left in place for three weeks, and then removed for exactly one week to allow for menstruation.

A new ring should then be inserted on day 29 of your cycle, which is exactly seven days after removal of the previous ring. Unlike a diaphragm, NuvaRing is not a barrier method of birth control. Instead it works by releasing small amounts of estrogen and progestin (etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol to be exact), the same hormones that are found in a birth control pill. These hormones are effective in several different ways: by preventing ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus (which prevents sperm from reaching the egg), and by changing the lining of the uterus (which could prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus). When used correctly this form of birth control is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

What are the Advantages of the Vaginal Ring?

According to PlannedParenthood.com, the vaginal ring offers many of the same benefits as the birth control pill yet is a convenient option for effective monthly birth control. Possible benefits include: shorter and lighter periods, diminished acne, relief from menstrual cramps, some protection against uterine and ovarian cancer, and a reduced chance of developing ovarian cysts and PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). NuvaRing is also a good choice for someone looking to manage irregular menstrual cycles.

What are the Disadvantages?

NuvaRing uses the same hormones as the birth control pill and therefore is likely to have the same disadvantages, as per Planned Parenthood. Commonly reported side effects include: spotting, increased vaginal discharge, infection, irritation, weight gain, headache, decreased sexual desire, and nausea. The ring can also be expelled from the vagina during sex, bowel movements, or with tampon use. If that happens, simply rinse off the ring and reinsert. If the contraceptive has been out of the body for more than three hours it may no longer be effective, and would require the use of back-up method of birth control. NuvaRing users must also follow a schedule in order to maintain effectiveness. Improper use could result in diminished pregnancy protection.

Certain medications may cause decreased effectiveness, including anti-fungals (to treat ringworm or a yeast infection, for example), anti-seizure meds, barbituates, St. John's Wort, and certain antibiotics. Always mention NuvaRing use when being prescribed a new medicine so as to avoid any possible drug interactions.

Are there Serious Risks Associated with NuvaRing?

Serious complications do not occur often, but should be a consideration. They can include: blood clots, heart attack, stroke, breast or ovarian cancer, liver tumors or cancer, serious problems with the eye, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, and ectopic pregnancy among other risks. Please refer to your physician for a complete list.

NuvaRing is considered to be a safe and effective choice for many women. No form of birth control is without disadvantages or risks. Talk to your physician about which method would be best for your unique situation.
